Depois de completar sua aclamada trilogia folk-rock em 1979, Jethro Tull voltou um ano depois com A, para marcar o aniversário do álbum, Jethro Tull - A BREAKOUTS  - edição do 40º aniversário introduzindo um som diferente e uma nova formação.

Produzido por Anderson e Robin Black, A foi gravado em Londres durante o verão de 1980 no Maison Rouge Mobile e Maison Rouge Studios. Junto com Anderson e Barre, a banda também contou com Dave Pegg (baixo, bandolim) e Mark Craney (bateria), juntamente com o intérprete convidado Eddie Jobson - um ex-aluno da Roxy Music - no teclado, sintetizador e violino elétrico.

Para esta nova coleção, o álbum foi expandido com cinco faixas inéditas das sessões de gravação, incluindo uma versão diferente do single "Working John, Working Joe", uma versão estendida de "Crossfire" e o outtake "Coruisk".
